First, I have to say this is an enjoyable book simply because it gives concise insight into the history, people and customs of the Yoshiwara. This book is a must-have if you want to learn more about this celebrated pleasure quarter and its denizens.
Second, while the book is a great read, the book's description above, clouded by Western misperceptions of the flower and willow world and geisha in particular, made me grind my teeth. This book is primarily about the customs and history of the courtesans, not the geisha. While the geisha were involved with the courtesans' customers on the entertainment level, they were not allowed to sleep with the customers because they would be directly competing with the courtesans and thus the brothel keepers' income. Mr. de Becker even talks about how the geisha were regulated to this end in his book.
In conclusion, if you want to learn more about the celebrated Yoshiwara courtesans of yesteryear with some geisha history thrown in for good measure, this is the book for you.
