Therefore, it is not surprising that this book methodically covers the principal payment systems (checks, ACHs, wires and global transfer systems - CHIPS and SWIFT), their basic workings, risk, and how to manage those risks. The subject matter of this book is critical for corporate financial managers - CFOs, Treasurers, Cash Managers, Controllers - as well as bank operations officers, and bank and corporate auditors.Since check fraud is currently a $10 billion a year problem an entire chapter is devoted to checks, their characteristics, the prevailing regulations, the risk parameters, and how to manage that risk including using internal controls, bank controls, check stock controls, and positive pay controls. The authors warn corporations that they should be alert to "gross negligence and willful conduct clauses" in bank agreements which may put undue and unnecessary risk on them.Wire transfer, defined to include FedWire, CHIPS and SWIFT, are covered in two chapters. The first chapter covers the transfer from the originating bank to the receiving bank. The next topics reviewed include: liability for fraudulent transfers, managing risks in the links of the wire systems, and the bank's perspective on wire transfer risk. The second chapter on wire transfers focuses on completing the transfer and the rules for handing errors.The Automated Clearing House (ACH), the second type of electronic funds transfer, in addition to wires, is covered in a separate chapter. Shadows of the Prophet: Martial Arts and Sufi Mysticism (Muslims in Global Societies Series) Review

Wow, is all I can say! This book is an incredible work of research. This book takes you into the world of not only the martial art Penjak Silat but also into the workings of the Sufi religion of Malaysia as well as Malaysian culture and idiosyncracies. Farrer is not someone who examines it from the outside, he actually practices for many years the martial art with dozens of teachers in Malaysian and England gathering vast amounts of inner stories, techniques and philosophies of the teachers. He then combines his findings into a well laid out plan of how the art is taught and passed on from generation to generation.

The Sufi religion can seem very complex and hidden from those outside but Farrer divulges the very unknown inner workings of the religion focusing on the Nasqbandhi branch of the Sufi Path. This Path is also made more complex by the interlinked teachings which combine with Silat to make a whole body, mind and spiritual tradition in the Malaysia.

Farrer takes complete notes of his deep connection with multiple teachers examining their personal take on the religion, martial art, and spiritual traditions of Malaysian. Malaysia has a very complex system of spiritualism that many might think is only shamanistic/animistic/Pagan in origin but with the onset of Islam much of that became banned and a new form of mysticism came about and Farrer examines many traditions and approaches to practicing this indigenous belief system that later adapts much of Islam as is framework but retaining many "older" beliefs and magical practices.

Even though I paid alot for this title, I actually believe it was worth it. There is literally not a single title that has been written on these subjects which have been combined into such a great solid well reseached read. If your interested in the world of Malaysian culture, martial arts, Islamic mysticism and Sufi tradition this book is the bible for it.

Manual of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology, Fourth Edition Review

This book was a major disappointment. It attempts to fill an important niche: that of a concise, up-to-date, single volume overview of pediatric hematology and oncology. I bought the book to have a good review of the field and to take advantage of its many reference tables. Alas, the book suffers from an apparent lack of editing. It is littered with typographical errors, most of which could have been identified with the spell check function on any word processing program. There is little distinction between standard therapies and the author's preferences. The worst feature of the book is its brief discussions of pathogenesis, which are often disorganized and irrelevant to clinical practice (which is the book's focus), and in some cases appear to have been written with little understanding of the field. The section on the pathogenesis of Diamond-Blackfan anemia is a prime example of a collection of unrelated observations that provide no deeper understanding of the disease. In every chapter there are sentences that appear out of context. For example, the section on leukemia lists survival rate as a prognostic factor, as if the survival rate is known at the time of diagnosis. Treatment regimens are sometimes mentioned without any sense of whether they actually work. I will keep this book for its reference tables (though the frequency of errors in the text makes me distrust the tables, too). By eliminating the errors and editing the text carefully, this could be an excellent book.
