Neuroscientific Basis of Dementia Review

Audience: Scientists and graduate students in medical, pharmacological and biological research, physicians and researchers in the biotechnological and pharmaceutical industries. Purpose: To give a comprehensive and detailed overview of the current worldwide knowledge about dementia disorders, particularly Alzheimer's disease (AD). Content: The book opens with two articles which deal with the phenomena of membrane lipid signaling, neuroinflammation and neuronal degeneration in AD. The next section, dealing with memory and its impairment, has chapters on long-term memory, amygdala damage in AD, memory in the hippocampus and hippocampal long-term potentiation. Then, there are eight chapters involving the tau protein that aggregates to cause neuronal degeneration in AD and other dementing disorders where neurofibrillary tangles and other tau deposits occur. These chapters include one on transgenic mice overexpressing the human tau who develop a progressive tauopathy similar to frontotemporal dementia with parkinsonism linked to chromosome 17, two on tau mutations, one which suggest that the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis/parkinsonism-dementia complex of the Kii peninsula is a new form of familial tauopathy, one on a new disease entity senile dementia of the neurofibrillary tangle type, and three on cellular pathology of tau. The next section contain three chapters on dementia related to synuclein. These papers show that alpha-synuclein is a common mediator of many neurodegenerative diseases, now called synucleinopathies (Parkinson's disease, dementia with Lewy bodies, LB variant of AD, multiple system atrophy) and give future directions for alpha-synuclein fibrillogenesis as target for drug development. The role of the presenilins (PS) in amyloid precursor protein (APP) processing and beta-amyloid (A-beta) production in AD is next covered in a series of thirteen chapters. These include seven on the presenilins and six on various aspects of beta-amyloid peptide. Cumulatively, these papers give evidence that the accumulation of A-beta peptide deposits (the presumed prime-mover in AD) in the cortex requires cleavage within the transmembrane domain of APP. Gamma-secretase has been posited as the agent responsible for this cleavage, but has managed to elude every effort to isolate and identify it. Four reports published in 1999 appear to be closing in on this long-sought goal. Three of them show that PS-1 is necessary for the cleavage of Notch, which mediates cell-cell interactions in determining cell fate during development. To carry out its signaling function, Notch requires cleavage in its transmembrane domain in a manner reminiscent of A-beta production. The fourth reports on mutations in PS-1 that completely abolish APP cleavage and suggests that PS-1 itself is gamma secretase (since two separate groups in Jan/Feb 2001 have found that transgenic mice lacking the BACE1 isoform of beta-secretase do not produce A-beta and grow to seemingly normal adulthood without unacceptable side-effects, now we know that a promising target for an AD therapy may be the beta-secretase as well). Finally, there are five chapters on the diagnosis and therapeutics of dementia. They comprise phenotype/genotype correlation in familial AD, risk factors and longitudinal studies of at-risk individuals from familial AD pedigrees, biological markers for differential diagnosis, cognitive deficits and functional neuroimaging techniques. One of these articles focused interest on the intake balance of polyunsaturated fatty acids called omega-3 and omega-6, which are not synthesized in mammals. The paper gives convincing evidence that genetic risk of AD might be lowered by the increased omega-6/omega-3 ratio (together with increased vitamin C, carotene and antioxidant levels). The last chapter gives a review of the recent progress of possible future therapeutic strategies. The most promising among these are anti-tau phosporylation (since recent demonstration that the propyl isomerase Pin-1 can restore the ability of phosphorylated tau to bind microtubules and promote microtubule assembly) and vaccine therapy (after a novel and exciting result of immunization of young monkeys, which produced high titres of serum A-beta antibody, almost completely prevented development of A-beta deposition, dystrophic neurites, astrocytosis and microgliosis, while immunization of the older animals also markedly reduced the extent and progression of the AD-like brain lesions). Highlights: The book is cohesive and highly readable. It fully covers a vast and scattered literature on latest progress in dementia research. Limitations: As with any multiauthored text, there is some redundancy. However, overlapping chapters on presenilins and A-beta are quite consistent with each other. Related reading: Two well-established books in the field are Alzheimer's disease and related disorders: Etiology, pathogenesis and therapeutics (Iqbal, Swaab, Winblad, Wisniewski, eds.; Wiley, 1999) and Alzheimer's disease (Terry, Katzman, Bick, eds.; Lippincot Williams & Wilkins, 1999). Before new editions of these books that are expected around 2003 or later, Neuroscientific basis of dementia neatly fits the gap and provide an integrative current view of one of the major medical problems of our time. Reviewer: Goran imi , MD, PhD, Department of Neuroscience, Crotian Institute for Brain Research, Zagreb University Medical School, Zagreb, Croatia.

Product Description

Organizations that rely on computing technology for survival understand the critical importance of managing projects that meet strategic goals and objectives. The diversity of business globalization and electronic commerce combined with the unceasing pace of technical change continues to challenge efforts for more proficient project management techniques. Presenting the tools you need to meet the challenges of the new business environment, New Directions in Project Management covers best practices in all areas of managing software development projects practices that have been determined by measurable results not vague ideologies.

In addition to a comprehensive treatment of software development project management, this book covers managing outsourced projects, team- and consensus-building, requirements definition, systems integration, measurement and metrics, and quality assurance testing. Rather than force-feeding a particular vision of project management and one methodology, the integrated approach combined with detailed concepts and techniques presented here offer you valuable advice and guidance for your project’s success.

Successful planning for the challenges of the new business environment will remain complex, but not unachievable. In this environment, project management cannot be viewed only as a solitary management activity but as a set of dynamic principles that can be cultivated and improved through practical experience. This demands the best of your skills. Covering software development project management from all sides, New Directions in Project Management gives you the advantage.

New Directions in Project Management (Best Practices) Review

There are two things prospective readers need to know about this book: (1) it is focused in IT and software development project management, and (2) it is not a 'how to' book. This is a collection of papers on advanced project management topics that experienced IT project managers will find enlightening and up-to-date with respect to techniques. The papers are divided into the following six topic areas:(1) Essential Concepts of Project Management, (2) Critical Factors for Project Quality, (3) Managing Business Relationships, (4) Effectively Managing Outsourced Projects, (5) Managing Special Projects and (6) Measuring and Improving Project Management Success. What I like is that the book does not focus solely on software development projects, but covers areas that will interest project managements in infrastructure, oursourcing management and other IT functions. I also liked the following papers that address concerns of PMs from a larger perspective: "SEI CMM or ISO 9000: Which Is Right for Your Organization? ", "Incorporating Six Sigma Concepts into Systems Analysis" and "Managing Development in the Era of Large Complex Systems". In addition, there are many papers that address concerns common to all IT project managers, regardless of their functional area, including: "Business and IT: Developing Strategic Alliances", "Creating and Implementing a Balanced Measurement Program" and "Ten Ways to Improve Project Performance". IT project managers will benefit greatly from the information presented in this book. It should be a part of any PMO library, and every consulting firm should have a copy available to its project managers. Product Description

The Japanese geisha is the ultimate erotic icon - the courtesan par excellence - and this is her definitive book. The life of the geisha is the most secret and traditional in Japan and today remains largely unchanged and unknown behind the teahouse doors. This remarkable work was the first to reveal the hidden world of the geisha of the famous Yoshiwara quarter of Tokyo, the 'nightless city', and it has never been surpassed. Written over a hundred years ago, it is a meticulous description of every aspect of geisha life, including the history of the geisha, life stories of famous geisha, the decoration of the teahouses, the different grades of courtesans, their costumes and hairstyles, the instruction of young girls brought to the teahouses, the art of selecting a geisha for the evening, proper conduct on the morning after, erotic practices, and charms used by geisha to attract lovers. The vibrant life of the Yoshiwara quarter is evoked with finesse, portraying the procurers and madames, the festivals and geisha processions, even the menus of the teahouses, along with such matters as forms of contracts between brothels and courtesans. Profusely illustrated with photographs, prints, and drawings, this is an essential volume for all who are fascinated by the sophisticated sensuality of the willow, the cherry blossom, and the silken kimono.

Nightless City Of Geisha (Kegan Paul Japan Library) Review

First, I have to say this is an enjoyable book simply because it gives concise insight into the history, people and customs of the Yoshiwara. This book is a must-have if you want to learn more about this celebrated pleasure quarter and its denizens.
Second, while the book is a great read, the book's description above, clouded by Western misperceptions of the flower and willow world and geisha in particular, made me grind my teeth. This book is primarily about the customs and history of the courtesans, not the geisha. While the geisha were involved with the courtesans' customers on the entertainment level, they were not allowed to sleep with the customers because they would be directly competing with the courtesans and thus the brothel keepers' income. Mr. de Becker even talks about how the geisha were regulated to this end in his book.
In conclusion, if you want to learn more about the celebrated Yoshiwara courtesans of yesteryear with some geisha history thrown in for good measure, this is the book for you.

Odori: Japanede Dance Review

I rated this 3 stars instead of the 5 I would have given it, had it not been so expensive (i.e., cost per page). This was written in 1938 by Kasyo Matida (the newer date is in reference to its re-copyright date, rather than a change in content, and it's actually 2009, not 2005). It covers the various schools of Japanese dancing, including their origins (e.g., Nishikawa [both schools, Tokyo and Nagoya], Hanayagi etc.), so it is interesting from that aspect. It was written as a tourist guide and published by the Board of Tourist Industry, Japanese Government Railways.

Product Description

It is widely asserted, outside Japan, that the failure of foreign banks to penetrate Japanese financial markets is the direct result of stringent Japanese protectionist policies. However, although there may be some truth in this, it is a one-dimensional argument. Opening Japan's Financial Markets takes a broader view. It accepts that the Japanese bureaucracy have skillfully limited the scope of foreign banks. However, in examining the history of foreign banking activity in Japan, it becomes clear that ineptitude on the part of foreign banks and governments has also been a major factor.

Opening Japan's Financial Markets Review

This is a review from the Financial Times in London. JRB Copyright 1994 The Financial Times Limited; Financial Times (London) November 2, 1994, Wednesday By CHRISTOPHER HOWE 'OPENING JAPAN'S FINANCIAL MARKETS' By J. Robert Brown Jr. Routledge, Pounds 45, 272 pages ... The Japanese began systematic preparations to penetrate the western economies about 130 years ago. Serious, large-scale efforts to reverse the process date only from the rise of the Japanese trade surplus in the early 1980s. Given the linguistic, psychological, institutional and other barriers between the parties, it is not surprising that the balance of economic advantage in recent years has seemed to be so much in Japan's favour. Furthermore, although the west is beginning to catch up, at least in consciousness of the problem, the problem itself gets more difficult. For whereas the main challenge used to be how to penetrate the markets for goods, there is now increasing concern with the markets for services and with the obstacles to making a success of direct investment in Japan. J. Robert Brown's book is one of the most interesting accounts of these subjects yet to appear. Based on careful study of the literature and on more than 100 detailed interviews, it throws new light not only on the banking sector, but on the wider issue of how public and private sectors can interact in the process of market opening. A small number of western banks had established themselves in Japan before the Pacific War, including the old British Far Eastern banks, and Citibank, representing America. These mainly supported foreign trade and the banking needs of foreign companies in Japan. In the case of Citibank, at least, care was taken not to compete with domestic banks, on whom it relied for advice on local creditworthiness. During the post-war occupation, foreign banks had a new opportunity to re-enter the market and three prominent American Banks did so. Again, however, the foreigners were sidelined rather than integrated into the mainstream of the financial system, focusing on trade finance and short- to medium-term dollar lending. After the occupation, the Japanese government and the Ministry of Finance (MOF) resumed control. No new foreign entrants were allowed in for many years and a highly regulated financial system was established. In this system, Japanese institutions were assigned designated, highly specialized roles and the volume, direction and price of credit flows were each tightly controlled by an MOF with enormous legal and discretionary authority. The only way in which foreigners could be fitted into the picture was to restrict them to specific classes of business, such as foreign exchange, trade and dollar lending. Foreign banks acquiesced in these arrangements through much of the 1960s and early 1970s partly because their niches were exceptionally profitable. So much so, that in the early 1960s Citibank's profits from only four branches were larger than those of Fuji Bank, the largest of the Japanese City Banks. The other reason for acquiescence was that in the Japanese system, since banks rather than security markets were the main source of industrial finance, they were called upon to provide what was in reality a form of risk-sharing, equity finance, and were also expected by the authorities to provide both leadership and, when necessary, bail-outs for large companies. At the time, western bankers, with their short term, balance sheet approach to lending, found these practices unacceptable and hence were unwilling to undertake a lead role in company lending, even had they been encouraged to do so. All this began to collapse after the oil shock of the 1970s and the rise of US-Japan trade frictions in the 1980s. What Brown brings out so clearly is that liberalisation and market opening occurred because it was in the interests of both the western banks and the Japanese City Banks. Both sides wanted new instruments and avenues to funds and both wanted abolition of the old division between banking and securities business. The government had ultimately to agree to change, and all that this entailed, because of its need for large-scale bond financing to cover its budgetary deficit. Brown also shows that, although driven by these underlying factors, the occasion of the big breakthrough was the Reagan-Nakasone summit of 1983, when an embarrassing absence of business allowed the Americans to put the financial services issue on an unexpectedly high-level agenda. In spite of all the change and the formal steps towards liberalisation that have taken place, the longer term results remain disappointing. On the positive side, examples such as Citibank have shown that by taking a long view and making a careful analysis of the market, by a shrewd combination of conformity and innovation, and by good training and personnel policies, it is possible to make a success of business in Japan. On the other hand, the overall profitability and market shares of western banks as a group, remain very low. A fundamental reason for this is that there remain strong traditional elements in both the relationships between the financial system and the MOF, and between the institutions and their customers. Whether the political economy of the post-'Bubble' era will change this, or whether western companies will adapt even more flexibly to Japanese ways, remain fascinating questions for the future.
