The Neurologic Involvement in Systemic Autoimmune Diseases, Volume 3 (Handbook of Systemic Autoimmune Diseases)

Product Description
Systemic autoimmune diseases can affect both the central and peripheral nervous systems in a myriad of ways and through a heterogeneous number of mechanisms leading to many different clinical manifestations. As a result, neurological complications of these disorders can result in significant morbidity and mortality. Advances in the diagnosis, laboratory investigations, and management of these conditions has placed an increasing burden on the practicing clinician to correctly assess and treat these patients. This volume of the Handbook of the Systemic Autoimmune Diseases will help the clinician and researcher better understand the current concepts of nervous system involvement from systemic autoimmune disorders, recognize current approaches to diagnosis and treatment, current controversies, and areas that need significant research efforts. It is believed that providing this approach in a single volume will facilitate its use as a frequent resource for all those caring for or investigating these patients and their diseases.
Each chapter follows a consistent outline to provide the reader with important and useful information in an easy-to-navigate manner and is also liberally referenced to provide more primary source material for further consideration. The standardized approach to each chapter will allow the reader to be able to compare and contrast more efficiently the neurological complications of the autoimmune diseases discussed.
The Neurologic Involvement in Systemic Autoimmune Diseases, Volume 3 (Handbook of Systemic Autoimmune Diseases) Review
The book is what it claims to be and is well laid out. The information is there - using articles from the 80's into the 2000's. You can see the available research over a long period of time. Also, there are plenty of cited articles so that you can do further reading if you choose to take the time to go to a library that has access to medical journals. All positives.BUT -
1) This book is about the size of a Cooking Light magazine, but bound in hard cover like your elementary school library books.
2) I had the benefit of growing up in a medical household, so this has been useful for me. This book would not be all that well suited to someone who was just looking for general information on autoimmune issues. "The Autoimmune Connection" would be better suited to general audiences w/ no medical background.
3) I wish the authors didn't feel the need to speculate in a sentence or two about why certain studies cited don't always agree with each other. That is the nature of the beast, and there is no need for trying to 'explain things away' with speculation.
4) I paid about $45 for this book NEW using one of Amazon's marketplace sellers, and feel that THAT is about the 'right price' - NOT the $200+ asking price.
