This book is a very detailed account of Peruvian political and military mindsets during the 20th Century. Very detailed, it reads as if you were reading the script of a Discovery documentary. There are several problems with the way it is written, however. First, if you are not a good reader you should not read this book for fun as it is written at a higher education level. Even with my bachelor's I found myself rereading paragraphs several times to catch the meaning that was trying to be expressed. Second, most sentences in this book are run-on sentences. Some last more than 6 lines. By the time you finish the sentence you have to start it again because you get lost in all the commas and other punctuations. Third, the author skips around chronologically within paragraphs. He could be talking about something in 1941 and then talk about how something in 1942 affected the situation of something that happened in 1939. It was rather hard to keep things like that straight. But if you are looking for a detailed history of the Peruvian Military to include political influences, underhanded decisions, and just plain old dirty Latin American politics, this is the book for you. I have no idea how the author had researched so much information unless he was there and lived through it all. The accounts, some first-hand, were in depth, relevant, and made perfect sense when compared to the situation in which they were used. Overall a 4, losing a star for dificulty in understanding.
