With all the recent news about unrest in Tibet, this book is worthy as solid background. It describes the geography and geology of the Tibetan plateau. But it also devotes considerable space to explaining the economy of the region. You get an appreciation for the unusual conditions engendered by the high elevation. The authors of the chapters all appear to be Han Chinese. The tone is objective; no shrill propaganda by the Communist Party.

One striking finding was that the living conditions are more extreme than found in the high regions of the Americas. Tibet is simply higher on average. A rule of thumb was that for every kilometer of height, cardiovascular output falls by 10%. For parts of Tibet at 4km, we are staring at 40% less ability. A huge shortfall.

The book reports that prior to the 1950s, conditions were quite primitive over most of Tibet. Apparently in parts, they were even practising slash and burn agriculture! Something barely above Neolithic standards. Under Communist rule, agricultural output has significantly increased. Some 5 fold. More than in most other regions of China. Though to be sure some of this multiple was due to the sheer backwardness pre-revolution. Still you might think that objectively much has been done to improve the lot of the Tibetans.
