The Irish Education Experiment: The National System of Education in the Nineteenth Century: Volume 1 (Routledge Library Editions: Education)

Product Description
This volume focuses on the creation, structure and evolution of the Irish national system of education. It illustrates how the system was shaped by the religious, social and political realities of nineteenth century Ireland and discusses the effects that the system had upon the Irish nation: namely that it was the chief means by which the country was transformed from one in which illiteracy predominated to one in which most people, even the poorest, could read and write.

This book was published in 1970. It is surprising that this valuable book by an eminent scholar has been allowed to go out of print. It covers in detail the interaction between the Irish Government which had decided as early as 1812 to provide Government money to assist primary education in rural schools all over Ireland. It laid down as essential principles that all the children in a parish, regardless of the denomination to which they belonged, should be educated together, and that there should be no attempts made by any group to proselytize the children of other groups. The clergy of the major denominations resisted this strongly, wishing the Government to provide money for denominational schools instead. By and large the clergy won and Ireland got an educational system segregated on religious lines.Though the book ends rather arbitrarily at the year 1900 the author has combed the sources exhaustively. Against it one might say that thirty five years later some other aspects of the subject might have been treated. But nobody should attempt to write on education at any level in Ireland without having first read this bookMost of the consumer Reviews tell that the "The Irish Education Experiment: The National System of Education in the Nineteenth Century: Volume 1 (Routledge Library Editions: Education)" are high quality item.
