This is a welcome text in the evolving field of toxicity testing. The volume really starts with the cover which gives an elegant overview of where toxicity testing fits into safety evaluation of drugs and chemicals. The first section (Chapters 1-5) is a succinct review of the basic scientific principles needed to understand toxicity testing as well as a description of the regulatory agencies involved. In vivo and in vitro testing are covered in the remainder of the book. These sections are not intended to be how-to directions for performing such studies but rather give the reader insight into practical details, advantages, and disadvantages of the methods. There are many tables and figures that summarize and clarify the methods described. One of the most important features of the book are the suggested readings and review articles at the end of each chapter. These are thoughtfully compiled to encompass both classic papers and in-depth articles for each topic, providing resources for the advanced reader. This book will be particularly valuable for students and those starting on a career in toxicology, as well as a resource for toxicologists who are not involved in regulatory toxicity testing.

Kindle version: I was able to compare my Kindle version to a copy of the bound text. Although it is a well-done transfer (see below) I have two complaints about the Kindle version. The table of contents is finely subdivided and takes up 12 pages in the bound version. This is a lot of "next-paging" on the Kindle to find a link to a chapter. A hot-linked listing of chapters before the full TOC would have been appreciated. The index is rendered as an image of the bound version's index, which means that a) it refers to page numbers not locations, and b) as an image, when you increase the font size it does not change.

Now, for the good! Reading the book on the Kindle is excellent. In the original hard copy, fortunately the figures are black and white and the tables do not have shaded backgrounds. This means that both are exceedingly readable on the Kindle and the micrographs have nice resolution. Footnotes are handled well. They are gathered at the end of the book, and in the text there is a hot-link which brings you to the footnote. The "back" button returns you to your place. I have both the DX and Kindle 3. I prefer reading such texts on the DX but it works fine on the other. For those figures and tables that seem too small on the K3, selecting and clicking will automatically rotate to landscape and zoom.

The best book on practical DSP. It has the right balance of theory and practice. I have readen many DSP books. Many books are too theoretical and other ones are too practical. The book also covers some advanced topics that are very well approached for beginners.

In order to taking advantage of the book, I recommend to buy the cheap TI DSP Board (C5515 eZDSP USB Stick Development Tool) for practicing most of the exercises. This board is available for US $ 79 on TI Store.

However, this book is not for everyone (for self study). The reader should have experience on computer architecture, C and assembly programming, and MATLAB. A basic knowledge of DSP concepts is also recommended.

I recommend the book to anyone interested on practicing DSP basic and advanced concepts.
