The EU and Japan account for 1/3rd of the world economy. Their relations have moved from decades of trade disputes since 1990 towards relations of mutual amity and cooperation as befits likeminded mature economies sharing similar values and joint problems. How did this surprising turn-around came about? How were relations managed and decisions taken at the European end of the relationship? There are a lot of conspiracy theories around, from the Trilateral Commission, to Bilderberg and the Industrial Round Table, but this book in 16 detailed chapters gives the real story, by senior administrators really involved in the decisions and in the negotiations. Their story is fascinating, with a lot of detail. The prose unsurprisingly is mostly bureaucratic - surely not academic nor journalistic, be warned, - but it has the definite advantage of having been written by people in the know. Most are retired, hence they were able to spill the beans. This heftily priced volume will surely remain a must read on EU-Japan relations for a long time to come. It would be nice, but is probably a vain hope, to someday also see a matching volume by Japanese senior practioners to read their part of the story. In sum, a thorough read on how Eurocrats work, interacted and were at their very best, including when handling shortcomings in EU decision making and less than coherent member states' policies.
