Richard G. Bromley has provided the geologist with a good summary of ichnofossils and their implications. He tells us how trace fossils can better be recognized in the field. A list of references is available for further study.

Bromley describes some trace fossils in significant detail. For example, Zoophycus has branches having diameters that change with distance, and he interprets this as the growth of the organism that constructed this trace fossil.

He discusses several classifications of trace fossils, for example the stratinomic classifications of Seilacher and Martinsson. He always defines the terms he uses (for example, cubichnia for resting traces).

Bromley also puts ichnofossils into a paleoenvironmental context. He repeatedly stresses oxygen in the sediment as a major limiting factor that constrains the burrowing behaviors of benthic organisms. He elaborates on the tiering of ichnofossil assemblages, and also provides an overview of ichnofabric analysis. Finally, he cites some measurements of the rate of reworking of sediment by modern benthic organisms.

Unlike other CRCpress titles, this one has little coverage of the subject. Neither transforms nor data compression issue has been comprehensively addressed. One can easily fand better chapters on transforms in many image processing and coding books, including the non-sinusoidal ones - which are missing in the book. Editors seem to contact with authors who apparently did not want to write tutorial-type texts, but who had some rather specific things to say (Eg. Comparametric transfomrs for transmitting eye tap video with PTP). That might be OK, however there are so many basic things which are not here. If transforms and compression is considered together, the book still fails to serve since many issues such as coding gain and other analytical analysis, as well as many popular methods have been superficial. As a whole, the book seem a bit inconsistent to me.

In 1989 I took a zeroxed copy of this book, (as it has been unavailable for years) written by my great great (etc) Uncle, J.L.Krapf, to East Africa with me as my primary guide book. I rented a Land Rover in Nairobi and followed his routes and discoveries. From Mount Kenya to Mombassa I retraced this early missionary's journeys, one hundred years after his death. I had far better transportation. J.L.Kraft, survived the fevers that killed off his contemporaries, translated the Bible into Swahili, pioneered east to west routes across Africa, and fought against the Slave Trade. Before Stanley and Livingston there was J.L. Krapf. The book relates his humble view of his acomplishments, as one of the first explorers of Africa.
