It's a classic. Pratt put a lot of work and detail into it, and it does contains the basics. It also has typo's on some (bunches) of the formula's, transforms, etc. that are annoying if you know about them (hazardous if you don't). Due to the bugs, this would not be my first choice in a DIP book, but I don't know which one would, either. If you are forced into it, find an errata for this book and mark it up, then the book will serve you well.

Electron Energy-Loss Spectroscopy in the Electron Microscope Review

For as long as I can remember, Ray Egerton has been at the forefront of electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) in the transmission electron microscope (TEM). For those who want to find out more about EELS and its ability to map composition at a nanometer scale (especially for low Z elements), this book is probably the best place to start. In addition to describing such instrumentation as magnetic prisms and lenses, the author provides a review of elastic and inelastic scattering theory. Inelastic scattering, as the key to understanding EELS, and the source of the features in the EELS spectrum, is broken down into plasmons (both bulk and surface) and the characteristic atomic excitations that lead to absorption edges. Bethe's theory of energy loss from characteristic atomic excitations is laid out in sufficient detail, as is the formulation of EELS spectra in terms of the complex dielectric constant. Inelastic scattering theory is, in turn, used by the author to calculate the spatial resolution of this technique as a function of the incident electron energy and the electron energy loss.

If you want to get a taste of what this book is like, I would suggest that you read Egerton's review article in Rep. Prog. Phys. 72 (2009) 016502 as well as his article in Ultramicroscopy 4 (1979) 169.

Engineering Mechanics: Statics and Dynamics Review

This textbook was used for my statics and dynamics courses. As an undergraduate engineering student, learning statics from this book was pretty good. However, the chapter summaries are too brief, most are merely a collection of all the equations that were presented in the preceding section. No insights or "big picture" thoughts on how to identify types of problems or approach them. The images used throughout are high quality. A nice feature is how the difficulty of a problem is indicated by a thermometer. The dynamics section was very hard to learn from. The authors used inductive examples to develop the ideas of dynamics which is indeed creative but I found to be very difficult to sit through when you just want to be told what a concept is, why it's important, and how to apply it.

After completing the course and moving on to dynamics I was exposed to a better textbook; Vector Mechanics for Engineers: Statics & Dynamics by Beer, Johnston, et al. These authors have been writing this textbook for much longer than Costanzo, Plesha, and Gray.

Fundamentals of Protein NMR Spectroscopy (Focus on Structural Biology) Review

I'm a complete novice to NMR and this text provides a great introduction to the field with a focus on biological molecules. I've also read parts of Protein NMR Spectroscopy by John Cavanagh and I think Rule's book sets up the stage nicely for the reader to explore further by reading more detailed texts (Cavanagh) on particulars of the field. It's a relatively slim volume and not as intimidating in the mathematical modelling as some of the other books. If you need to understand an NMR phenomenon, read about it in this book first and it'll save you some time in developing an overall picture before looking at pages and pages of derivations in a dusty old book. I have Dr. Rule in part of my classes, I'm a first year grad student, and his amazing teaching ability in the classroom is reflected in the book. Highly recommended to those new to NMR along with Cavanagh's text. I wouldn't leave home without them.
